ReLAAx Medical recognizes that the root cause of embolic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation is stasis:
“…during AF there is a decrease in LAA contractility and function, manifest as a decrease in Doppler velocities and dilation of the LAA. The remodeling process associated with AF causes the LAA to function as a static pouch, predisposing to stagnation and thrombosis.” JACC: CV Imaging, 2014
Drugs are the first-line therapy but >50% of patients don’t adhere, and for those that do the bleeding risk remains a serious patient safety issue and quality-of-life suffers.
Left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) seeks to address this issue by implanting a plug to block off the appendage. But >50% of patients implanted with occluders show peri-device leak (PDL), and leaks larger than 3mm have a 4x increased risk of thromboembolism!
